Dermatopathology

Dermatopathology is the study of skin pathology and a subspecialty of dermatology and pathology and to a lesser extent of surgical pathology that focuses on the study of cutaneous diseases at a microscopic and molecular level. The vast difference between the dermatologists and dermatopathologist is that dermatologists treat the patients, whereas dermatopathologists receive the biopsy specimens, investigate the tissue and build the diagnoses. In some cases, extra specialized testing has to be performed on biopsies, as well as immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, flow cytometry, and molecular-pathologic analysis.
